Why Run? Why Cycle? Why Tri? For the joy of it.

There are lots of reasons that I triathlon, but there is only one reason that really matters: for the joy of it. When I lose sight of that my training stops making sense and it all seems a little bit too much, a bit too crazy, and worst of all, a bit pointless.

This morning I didn't start my Brick (30 minute run, 60 minute cycle, 10 minute run HARD) until nearly 10:30am- a very late start by my standards. I dragged by feet, sent some emails, made some phone calls, and considered just not training. I've done bugger all training, so why not just write the week off anyway (that's the all or nothing trait I'm trying to temper a little).

Then I started to run. The sun is shining, the scenery of rural Norfolk is beautiful and I had some favourite songs in my ear (my ipod security blanket is allowed in tough weeks, I say). I felt great, things felt right, and I remembered why the hell I had signed up for Le Tour de Dugong (and the taster event, Hawaii Half Ironman). I jumped on the bike, and I didn't exactly have a grin plastered on my face as I grimaced with effort against the winds of Norfolk, but I felt great.

Triathlon, for the pure fun and joy of it.
